Key Duties & Responsibilities

As the School Cook, your day will be varied and fast-paced, focusing on the safe and efficient production of high-quality meals. Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Meal Preparation & Cooking: Preparing, cooking, and presenting a daily menu of hot and cold meals for students and staff, adhering to planned recipes, portion sizes, and nutritional guidelines.
  • Kitchen & Food Safety: Maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene in all food preparation and storage areas. Strictly adhering to HACCP principles, completing daily temperature checks, and ensuring full compliance with Food Safety Regulations.
  • Stock & Inventory Management: Assisting with ordering supplies, checking deliveries, and managing stock rotation to minimise waste and control costs effectively.
  • Team Collaboration: Working collaboratively with other kitchen assistants and the Catering Manager to ensure a smooth, efficient, and positive service during busy lunch periods.
  • Special Dietary Requirements: Preparing meals for pupils with specific allergies, intolerances, or cultural/religious dietary needs with utmost care and attention.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensuring all kitchen equipment is used correctly, reporting any faults immediately, and participating in basic cleaning and maintenance routines.

Essential Skills & Experience Required

To be successful in this School Cook position, you will need a blend of practical skills and personal attributes. We are looking for:

  • Proven Cooking Experience: Significant experience working as a Cook or Chef, preferably within an education setting, care home, or large-scale catering environment. Experience with bulk cooking is essential.
  • Food Hygiene Certification: A valid Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene certificate is mandatory. A Level 3 certificate would be a distinct advantage.
  • Organisation & Time Management: The ability to work efficiently under pressure, prioritise tasks, and ensure meals are ready for service on time, every time.
  • Team Player Attitude: A cooperative, flexible, and positive approach. You must be able to take direction from the Catering Manager and also work independently when required.
  • Passion for Food & Nutrition: A genuine interest in creating healthy, tasty food for children and an understanding of basic nutrition.
  • Enhanced DBS Check: Willingness to undergo an Enhanced DBS check (which we can process for you) as you will be working in a school environment.

Frequently Asked Questions: School Cook Jobs

What qualifications do I need to be a School Cook in London?

The most critical qualification is a valid Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene certificate. Previous experience in a professional kitchen, especially in bulk cooking for schools, care homes, or similar settings, is highly valued. While formal chef qualifications (NVQ, City & Guilds) are beneficial, a proven track record and the right attitude are often just as important. An Enhanced DBS check is mandatory for working in schools, which we can help you obtain.

Are School Cook jobs term-time only?

Many permanent School Cook roles are term-time only, which typically means you are paid for your working weeks and may have the option to spread your pay over 12 months. However, this specific role through Staffing Service is a temporary position with an immediate start, covering a current need. There is a strong possibility of it becoming a permanent, term-time only role for the right candidate. We also advertise various temporary holiday cover and summer positions for catering staff.

How does working with a staffing agency benefit me over applying directly?

Staffing Service acts as your advocate. We have pre-existing relationships with schools and know about vacancies before they are advertised publicly. We handle the payroll, ensuring you get paid weekly without fail, and manage holiday pay. We also provide access to a wider range of roles—not just in schools but across hospitality—giving you flexibility. For a deeper look at modern hiring, see our resource on Find Talent Faster: 2026 Strategic Hiring Playbook.

I have experience as a Housekeeper/Cleaner. Can I transition to a School Cook role?

While both roles require high standards of cleanliness, a School Cook position demands specific food preparation and safety skills. Your experience as a Housekeeper demonstrates reliability and an understanding of hygiene protocols, which is a great foundation. To transition, you would likely need to start in a Kitchen Assistant or Catering Assistant role to gain practical cooking experience while obtaining your Food Hygiene Level 2 certificate. We frequently place candidates in such entry-level positions—contact us to discuss your career path.
